MAZDA Safety Rating: NHTSA and IIHS

For this guide, we’ve taken data from the two leading U.S. agencies on vehicle safety: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Although the Mazda CX-5 scored top marks from both agencies, their method of scoring is a bit different.

The Mazda CX-5 overall NHTSA safety rating is a perfect five stars. The NHTSA rates vehicle crashworthiness by running simulated collisions and seeing how the vehicle reacts. Within its overall five-star crash-test rating, the Mazda CX-5 scored five out of five stars for frontal crash and side crash safety, and four out of five stars for rollover crash safety.

The IIHS rates vehicle crashworthiness too, but they also score vehicles in categories like child restraints, headlight strength, and roof strength. The Mazda CX-5 was awarded a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, one of the two highest honors given by the agency. It scored perfect marks on roof strength, headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, driver restraints, and overall safety cage.
