What Does the Mazda Check Engine Light Mean?

Service light on dashboard

Have you ever been driving around Sartell and your Mazda check engine light comes on? From more serious issues such as a faulty engine electrical system to something minor like a loose gas cap, there could be several reasons as to why your check engine light illuminates. Read this guide by Eich Mazda on how to determine what your Mazda3 check engine light means.

Why is My Check Engine Light On?

If you’re driving to Sauk Rapids and your Mazda3 check engine light comes on, there may be a few things triggering the illumination. Here are a few reasons why your check engine light may be on

  • There’s an issue with the engine’s electrical system
  • There is an emission control system problem
  • The fuel tank is empty or has low levels
  • The gas cap is either missing or not screwed on tightly enough

Additional Information on Your Mazda3 Check Engine Light

When your Mazda check engine light comes on, your first reaction may be to worry. But, here are a few tips that will keep you, your passengers, and your car safe in this instance:

  • If the light continuously flashes or remains on for a long period of time, it’s best to avoid driving at high speeds. You’ll also want to schedule a service appointment at an authorized Mazda dealer service department to have your car evaluated.
  • A quick way to resolve an illuminated check engine light is to disconnect, then reconnect your car’s battery. However, Eich Mazda doesn’t recommend this as a solution for Saint Joseph residents because it can hide existing issues and potentially create new ones.

Tips on the SKYACTIV®-G Engine

Mazda SKYACTIV© TECHNOLOGY redefines engine capabilities because of its turbocharged performance and premier fuel efficiency. If your Mazda features either the SKYACTIV®-G 2.0T or the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T, here are some things to keep in mind to avoid SKYACTIV®-G engine problems on the road:

  • When performing engine-straining tasks like driving up a long hill, driving at high speeds, or towing for an extended period of time, idle the engine for at least 30 seconds before coming to a complete stop to avoid damage.
  • Don’t race or over-rev your engine.
  • When there is extremely cold weather, don’t race or over-rev the engine.
  • Keep up with your oil change schedule. Not sure how often you should change your oil? Consult your owner’s manual for an oil change interval.
  • Only use the recommended engine oil that’s stated in your owner’s manual.
